[hybrid] Having a problem getting ircd-hybrid installed via freebsd ports

I ran the make, and then make install, followed the directions for setting
up the rc.conf entry, etc.

When I run the following:

/usr/local/etc/rc.d/ircd-hybrid start

I get the following:

Starting ircd_hybrid.
ircd: version hybrid-8.1.3
ircd: pid 1121
ircd: running in background mode from /usr/local

However, when I check the pid file its empty.

I manually created the log files at /var/log/ircd/ thinking that was the
issue, but it still isn't running.

Suggestions or ideas?
